About Us:
In these challenging times, when so much wealth and power is concentrated in the hands of so few, it is more important than ever to unite working people with the broader political and social justice movement to win respect, dignity, economic justice, and racial equality on the job and in our communities.

SEIU 1199 New England is a democratic healthcare workers union rooted in the day-to-day fights of caregivers across Connecticut and Rhode Island. In recent years, members have won through militant direct action, a $25/hour standard for thousands of low-wage healthcare workers, taken on racism in the workplace, fought for progressive policy in state legislatures, and built the kind of worker power that changes workplaces, industries, and communities.

As a proud local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), one of the largest and most powerful labor organizations in the country, we are part of a 2-million-member movement united by the belief in the dignity and worth of workers.

In conjunction with the President, Secretary-Treasurer, and Team Leaders, the Education Director will design and implement member education in a fighting union with 30,000 members across the States of Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, coordinate logistics, and in many cases personally run training programs for worksite leaders and union staff
  • Write curricula on a variety of topics including members organizing, representation, political action, and train-the-trainer internal organizing, delegate/leader development, chapter building, political and economic issues regarding labor, running strikes, issue campaigns, arbitration training and more.
  • Develop outreach materials and recruitment plans
  • Complete needs assessments, maintain accurate training records, and write project reports
  • May be assigned to mentor new organizers or organizers on new assignments
  • May be assigned as a lead organizer on time-limited assignments.
  • Support other union priorities in organizing, bargaining, politics, and coalition work as directed by the President, Secretary-Treasurer, or Officers

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant union experience as a staff or member leader
  • Excellent program development skills
  • Demonstrated ability to write curricula and conduct training designed for adult learners of varied educational backgrounds
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, including public speaking
  • Strong commitment to the labor movement and work for racial and economic justice
  • Strong knowledge of Unions
  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with members and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others
  • Ability to take initiative, a strong orientation to teamwork
  • Ability to work in campaign settings (at times fast paced, under deadline, and with multiple projects)
  • Ability to work long hours, including some weekend and evening work
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • Bilingual is a plus

Compensation:
Salary depends on experience. As of 7/1/23, benefits include full employer-paid health benefits package and defined benefit pension plan, $570/month auto allowance, up to $100 monthly work-related cell phone reimbursement, and other benefits outlined in the policies of 1199 and the staff union contract. This is a full-time, salaried, overtime exempt position.
