Job Summary

The Environmental Analyst I is responsible for conducting inspections and collecting samples to support existing environmental monitoring programs and assure compliance with various environmental regulations, primarily, but not limited to, the Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act. In addition to significant time spent conducting inspections and collecting samples, the Environmental Analyst I performs data entry, maintains equipment and supplies needed for the work, and engages with stakeholders in the field to promote successful source water protection and environmental stewardship.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all Company safety protocols and maintain a safety-first mindset in the daily performance of duties.
  • Implement the annual watershed inspection program as required by the CT Department of Public Health (CTDPH). This includes scheduling and performing inspections; training temporary staff assigned to assist with the completion of the inspection program; documentation of inspection results; escalation of violations and threats of pollution for resolution; and preparation of the annual report to CTDPH.
  • Conduct routine small-system well head protection and aquifer protection area (APA) inspections following established protocols. Escalate violations and threats of pollution for resolution, as needed.
  • Conduct site monitoring inspections of active constructions projects in proximity to sensitive watershed areas. Escalate violations and threats of pollution for resolution, as needed.
  • Collect watershed stream samples, wastewater samples, and solid waste samples assuring integrity of samples from collection in the field to delivery at the lab. This includes scheduling sample collection events to conform to regulated (permit) compliance schedules.
  • Accurately enter inspection and sample data into existing databases/platforms. Document findings and observations of environmental concerns in detail.
  • Assist with the compilation of data and reporting for various annual compliance filings.
  • Proper use and maintenance of sample collection supply inventory, tools and landscaping tools used to maintain sample site accessibility.
  • Assist in the response to non-routine events (i.e., spills) that result in threats to source water.
  • Review land use applications for development in drinking water watershed areas and correspond with local land use agencies to assure compliance with source protection statutes. Make recommendations that prevent adverse impacts to drinking water resources including use of best management practices to protect sources of supply.
  • Engage with stakeholders in the field and in municipal offices (i.e., property owners, contractors, land-use agencies) around source protection regulations and desired source protection outcomes.

Preferred Requirements

  • Successful candidates will have a basic understanding of regulatory frameworks for protecting drinking water and the environment. 
  • Prior knowledge of field inspection and sample collection techniques is highly desired.

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office applications and Geographic Information System (GIS mapping) tools is required.

  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and water sample coolers (up to ~40 lbs.)
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain, including wooded and undeveloped areas.
  • Comfortable working independently in the field with periodic supervision.
  • Problem Solving
    • This position is expected to become proficient identifying common threats to water quality; the correct application of various mitigations and controls; and be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with various stakeholders to implement solutions. While daily work is proactive and routine, the Environmental Analyst I must recognize unique circumstances; employ higher-level problem solving; and exercise independent judgement when encountering non-routine events.
  • Accountability
    • This role is designed to use technical field skills; independently perform routine inspection and sample collection tasks; and is fully responsible for completion of these tasks on a schedule that meets compliance requirements. The Environmental Analyst I is expected to assess sample results/data and field conditions and work to investigate and resolve source protection concerns. The Environmental Analyst I represents the Company in person and in written correspondence in the performance of these duties. The role is expected to be self-directed in the carrying out the program, with support provided for complex and non-routine events.

Education/Certifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in an environmental field is required. 
  • A valid Connecticut driver’s license is required.
  • Operations-Level Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training must be successfully completed within six months of hire in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120(e)
  • Watershed Inspection Certificate must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • USDOT Hazmat Ground Shipper Certification must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • RCRA Hazardous Waste Management training must be successfully completed within one year of hire.

Salary

  • Job is classified as a non-exempt position with an hourly range of $30.00 to $36.00
  • This role is fully in-person, working out of the Easton, CT office.

  • Hours for this role are 8:00AM to 4:30PM, Monday through Friday.
