The Library Assistant uses various classification and location schemes to shelve and retrieve materials for users and staff of the Information Services Department. Assists in the public reading areas, processes shipments, enforces reading room policies, assists with library services (including photocopying, scanning, and processing), and performs other tasks as assigned. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.Essential TasksShelves and retrieves agency holdings using a variety of location and classification systems.Assists in the reading rooms by providing equipment instruction and enforcing policies.Processes collection materials, performs duplications services (photocopying and scanning), and handles mailings.Performs collection maintenance activities, including shifting, shelf reading, and inventorying.Attends work regularly and in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies and complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures, including safety and standards of conduct.Other TasksPerforms other duties, as assigned.Participates in special projects, as assigned.

Qualifications: Veterans, Reservist or Guardsmen with an MOS or additional duties that fall in the fields for related fields pertaining to the minimum experience requirements may meet the minimum qualifications for this position and are highly encouraged to apply. Please call Human Resources at (512) 463-6564 with questions or for additional information.Additional Military Crosswalk information can be accessed at QualificationsHigh school graduate or GED.Six months experience working in a library or archive.One year working experience in customer service or public contact setting.Experience using Microsoft Office Suite in a work setting.Preferred QualificationsPaid or volunteer working experience using the Dewey Decimal system, Texas Documents, Superintendent of Documents, a local classification schema, or other classification schema.Experience working with government documents in library or archive setting.Experience processing or inventorying large runs of materials or items.Experience enforcing rules and regulations in a paid work environment.Experience using the Internet and online databases and indexes.Experience using Excel or other spreadsheet application.Familiarity with genealogy research or local and family history resources.Fluency in Spanish.Knowledge Skills and AbilitiesAbility to communicate effectively with members of the public and coworkers in a work setting.Ability to shelve and retrieve materials accurately with little direct supervision.Ability to perform detailed tasks in a public area with many interruptions.Ability to successfully manage workload independently and with little direct supervision.Environmental/Physical ConditionsNormal non-smoking office work environment and may have exposure to dust and environmental allergens consistent with normal bus ness activities and human contact. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve moving; standing; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; climbing stools and ladders; performing tasks requiring fine motor skill and coordination to safely move items weighing up to 40 pounds, such as boxes of printed materials, microforms, furniture, or large, fragile items. Must be able to work extended periods at a computer. May require working extended hours and some evenings and weekends as needed. Normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies and interpret data.Other RequirementsFiling exercise involving arranging a typical sample of documents and a group of cards with Dewey Decimal numbers into the correct order will be administered at time of interview.In-basket exercise to be administered during interview.Lifting exercise, of 40 pounds, will be administered at the time of the interview.Criminal history check required of selected applicant.Reporting RelationshipsReports to the Information Services Supervisor. No supervisory responsibility.
