THERE IS A BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in major fields of study such as: social welfare, sociology, psychology, public administration, philosophy, education, anthropology, history, economics and/or English. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Possess two (2) years of experience as a social welfare worker or social work assistant in a voluntary, public, social, or health agency. One (1) year of this experience must have been in a medical setting and equivalent to the next lower grade in Federal service. Specialized experience includes assisting clients/patients with the enrollment process for housing programs, serve as liaison with multiple parties to address housing needs, interacting with clients/patients and with both clinical and non-clinical staff, orienting new clients/patients by providing education, resources and information about programs available, assist clients/patients with their move into housing, conduct walkthrough of apartments, providing support HUD-VASH clinical staff related to HUD-VASH program, conduct outreach to landlord and property managers to increase awareness and use of HUD-VASH vouchers. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is physically active, occurs in the clinical environment and in the community while serving Veteran populations with complex needs. While the work does not normally require physical care for a veteran, except in an unexpected emergency situation, the work may involve some walking, standing, bending, or carrying light items. Competent automobile driving skills are required. The position requires the transportation of Veterans as part of normal work requirements. The staff person, as part of their expected duties, will need to maintain an active unrestricted driver's license This transportation will be provided in approved government vehicles. The incumbent must meet the minimum VA and VHA medical requirements for the operation of vehicles as outlined in VA Handbook 5019, Part IV, Appendix A. The work is primarily performed in community and office settings. The Housing Specialist will be required to walk around the Medical Center and/or travel via government transportation to case management meetings in the home, meetings with the PHA, and meetings in the larger community, often with landlord or homeless service providers. The Housing Specialist may also be required to provide transportation to Veterans and the Veteran's family for some community-based appointments, medical, court or other justice contacts, or to obtain needed documentation or identification. The Housing Specialist may also provide community outreach involving additional community contacts.
