Job Title: Instructional Designer & LMS Administrator

Department: Academic Affairs

Reports To: Assistant Vice President of Academic Operations

Job Classification: Exempt

Location: District Services

Summary: The purpose of this position is to support the development and implementation of high-quality distance learning by combining instructional design expertise with day-to-day administration of the District’s learning management systems (LMS) and related technologies. This includes configuration,maintenance, integration, and security of LMS and associated academic systems, as well as alignment with institutional and regulatory requirements. The person in this position works closely with faculty to design and improve courses using evidence-based instructional design principles and accessibility standards. The role also provides support to faculty and students through training, resource development, troubleshooting, and timely communication regarding system updates and best practices. By combining technical and instructional focus, the person in this position ensures consistent, userfriendly, high-quality distance learning experiences across the District.

Job Responsibilities:
  • LMS Administration and Technical Support: Serves as the primary administrator for the District’s Learning Management System (LMS), assessment system, and other related systems and associated third-party tools, including the attendance tracking solution, video streaming and storage platform, e-book and digital content solution, plagiarism detection
    tool, accessibility tools, and other LTI course integrations. Ensures reliable, secure, and effective use across all instructional modalities. Configures and manages LMS settings, course shells, and merged courses. Administers and monitors LTI and other integrations in coordination with IT and vendors. Supports course setup and term readiness, including course readiness, cross-listing, availability, and functionality at the start of each term. Provides support for faculty, staff, and students, including troubleshooting course access, submissions, grades, and integrated tools. Escalates complex technical and integration problems to IT or LMS support as needed.Communicates system updates, outages, and other important notices in collaboration with Academic Operations and IT.
  • Instructional Design: Partners with faculty to design, develop, and revise high-quality distance learning courses and instructional materials following the appropriate instructional design practices and ensuring compliance with state, Federal, and other organizations such as NC-Sara. Monitors and promotes quality distance learning practices, including sharing updates, best practices, and innovations to improve distance learning.
  • Training and Distance Learning Support: Develops and conducts professional development and training focusing on the LMS and related academic systems, course design, and technology-enhanced instruction. Develops instructional training resources and materials, including video tutorials and guides for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Assists with developing and implementing policies and procedures related to distance learning and assessment. Supports compliance and annual reporting requirements for distance education and other assigned academic initiatives. Creates technical documentation and procedural manuals. Participates in District-wide committees, including strategic planning, technology planning, system user groups, and system implementations. Assists the IT department in developing, implementing, and maintaining a cyber/data security plan, especially as it relates to the District’s LMS and related academic systems.
  • Supports the overall success of the District's distance learning and assessment efforts by performing other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree, and 1 year of experience. Experience can be substituted for education.
  • Experience with Canvas LMS and HTML coding.

Abilities:

  • This position requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, technical aptitude, problem-solving, and the ability to work in an environment of shifting priorities and frequent interruptions. Along with these general characteristics, the position requires the ability to communicate complex technical matters using easy-to-understand non-technical language. This position must understand educational technologies such as learning management systems, assessment systems, video conferencing systems, and multimedia systems, including video editing.
  • The position must have knowledge of ADA and FERPA compliance, as well as an understanding of NC-SARA (National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements). This position also requires knowledge and understanding of academic assessment and familiarity with the unique systems and support needs of the higher education community.
  • This position should understand the actual systems used by the District and the associated processes and procedures.

Base Wage: $53,243 - $70,991 annually - actual salary will be based on experience and education.
