Job Description

System Blood Bank Specialist - Lead sought by University Medical Center, Inc. d/b/a UofL Health - UofL Hospital in Louisville, KY, to be responsible for the following: Follow the laboratory's procedures when training new employees on specimen handling, test analyses, & reporting results; work with the Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine & Blood Bank Manager to develop & maintain policies & procedures that reflect best manufacturing practices; initiate & implement new specialized Blood Bank testing to decrease test turnaround & improve patient outcomes; support external agency inspections; demonstrate instrument operation & troubleshoot to ensure proper functionality; perform annual employee direct observation of patient testing, instrument maintenance, & function checks to determine employee competency; assist with education of medical laboratory scientist students, medical lab technician students, residents, & other hospital personnel; document corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's performance specifications; report STATS or critical results to providers; adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document quality control activities, instrument & procedural calibrations & maintenance performed; ensure reagents/test kits have received dates, expiration dates, & opened dates; maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens; follow accrediting agency standards CAP, AABB, FDA, CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, Joint Commission & safety guidelines; & participate in safety training sessions & attend & contribute to Lab & Blood Bank meetings. Min. Requirements: Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Microbiology, or a related field.
